Bad dealings – update!

Unfortunately, it has been over 12 months and we still have not received Marlo’s registration papers from Forestwind Siberians, despite repeated contacts and several promises that the paperwork would be in the mail. A complaint was filed with the Better Business Bureau without response from the breeder.

UPDATED: The breeder has now sent us the blue slips! Also, the breeder has returned half of the deposit we had made to purchase a second kitten. We notified the BBB that the dispute had been resolved.

Closing up shop!

Well you’ve probably noticed that there has been a serious lack of posting in recent weeks… but this is good news! I haven’t had any reaction from Marlo, or any other cat for that matter, in so long that it now seems like I’ve blogged myself out of a blog. So if anyone is reading… so long and thanks for all the shoes ;)

On another note… I will soon be starting a new blog for my adventures in Roller Derby :)

Do not skip your allergy shot! But good news too

Dun dun dun…. I completely forgot to go get my Monday injection last week. So, I was surprised and a bit disappointed to learn today that having missed one dose, I could not procede to the next “higher” dose. So it’s like a wasted two weeks….

But… here is some good news.

I think having Marlo around for the last few months has actually provided me with some natural immunity. This weekend I cuddled with a full-grown female (spayed) cat, and had *no reaction*!! It’s far too early for my allergy shots to be working, and my allergy test definitely indicated a strong reaction when I went in for testing…. but no reaction to this cat whatsoever. Remember when I posted about sublingual therapy, and tongue-in-cheek suggested that maybe I should start licking the cat? Well I didn’t (I swear!). But maybe all the cuddles really did help. I can’t even remember the last time I got hives… and I was very very surprised that I didn’t get hives from the neighbours cat over the weekend :)

Finally! My first allergy shot.

After two unsuccessful attempts, I finally made it out to get my first allergy shot. It was the tiniest needle I have ever seen! I didn’t feel either the needle or the serum. After the needle I had to wait around for 30 minutes to ensure there was no reaction – there wasn’t any reaction at all. I was in and out fairly quickly; now it’s just a matter of putting it into my weekly routine. I think Mondays will work well. I can expect to see a reduction in allergy symptoms in about 6 months (just a bit too late for my seasonal allergies!) Although it can take years to be “rid” of an allergy, they will test me again in a year to see if I am still reacting to any of my triggers. Now, the next step will be to go visit some “regular” cats to see what my initial reaction is since I’ve been avoiding “regular” cats for quite some time. My last reaction to a regular cat was when I was expecting my third child and it came on within a few mins of entering a “cat house”….

The Allergy Challenge – Dos and Don’ts

If you’ve decided to visit a breeder for an allergy challenge, here are some things you might want to keep in mind:

1 – DO – visit a cat-house two weeks prior to visiting the breeder. It may sound cruel, but you should try to get at least an idea of what your allergic reaction looks and feels like. You may have been avoiding cats for sometime now, and allergies *CHANGE* frequently.

2 – DON’T – take any antihistimines for at least a week, and preferably longer before your challenge visit.

3 – DO – bring your antihistamines to the challenge visit.

4- DON’T – no matter how mild, go to your allergy visit with a cold. You will always wonder whether you were truly reacting or if it was “just a cold”. Also bear in mind that allergies tend to be worse when you have a cold.

5- DO – stay up late anticipating the event…. your allergies will be worse when you’re tired and if you want an honest reaction, this will test your limits.

6- DO schedule a LONG visit. Visit for as long as you can, then go take a break (for example go shopping). Let the natural endorphins/adrhenaline  that you have produced in excitement wear off for a while and only after this waiting period, GO BACK! Visit again.

7- DO be honest with yourself. Any symptoms that you are experiencing *could* get worse over time.

8- DON’T freak if you start reacting on your way home with your kitten. I am living proof that some allergies do dissipate with time (regardless of what some doctors might say!

9- DO consider taking allergy shots as soon as you start considering bringing a cat home :)

10 – DON’T test the hypoallergenic status of your cat on your family or friends…. without fair warning ;)

Gone to the vet – Neutering day

Sweet Marlo is having his neutering done today.

How funny is this? Kid vs. Kat

I’d never seen this show before, but this morning two of my children are home sick ( :( ) and we stumbled upon this little piece of hilarity. Kid vs. Kat : “The Allergy”.

You can see it here at the YTV website.

OMG Whip it…

I just saw the movie and now I am convinced that I must do roller derby. So, I’ve emailed a couple of places… both are not recruiting again until next fall so that gives me time to get fit before I need to put on skates. Hopefully they’ll have space for me next fall :) In the meantime, I guess I’ll need to come up with a name… So far, I’m thinking Punky Bruiser. LOL.

Editing because there’s already a girl who goes by a similar name… my current favourite then is Marilyn Manslaughter :)

Oh dear… no allergy shots on Sundays!

I didn’t realize that the doctor’s office would be closed on Sunday… so my first allergy shot will need to wait until next Saturday!

Wow! Cat reaction in the house… but not mine!

Some friends of mine came over last night. One of them happens to be cat-allergic but was such a sweetheart and decided to guinea pig herself out by not taking allergy medication before visiting. I was curious whether perhaps I really had become somewhat “immune” to Marlo since bringing him home…. Anyways, my dear friend did fairly well for the first hour or so… unfortunately Marlo “mouthed” her a bit and she developed the exact same hives as I used to get from him. She then took her allergy medication and did fairly well for the rest of the night, but did have to take her asthma inhaler. The next morning she was sneezing like crazy and needed to take an anti-histamine top-up. So from now on, no more testing on my friends ;) Said friend did mention however that even her parent’s hypoallergenic poodle causes her to react if she has not been with him consistently for a while.

Tomorrow I will be getting my first allergy shot, provided the injection order has been filled at the clinic. If so, I will update on how it goes. Also, I’ve decided that I will soon need to visit a “cat-house” to see what my “initial” reaction is so that I can evaluate how I am progressing. Clearly I am still very allergic to cats… my reaction during the allergy test was clear. I’ve just stopped reacting to Marlo so unless I see other people’s cats it will be hard to know if I am making any progress!
