If you’ve decided to visit a breeder for an allergy challenge, here are some things you might want to keep in mind:
– DO – visit a cat-house two weeks prior to visiting the breeder. It may sound cruel, but you should try to get at least an idea of what your allergic reaction looks and feels like. You may have been avoiding cats for sometime now, and allergies *CHANGE* frequently.
– DON’T – take any antihistimines for at least a week, and preferably longer before your challenge visit.
– DO – bring your antihistamines to the challenge visit.
- DON’T – no matter how mild, go to your allergy visit with a cold. You will always wonder whether you were truly reacting or if it was “just a cold”. Also bear in mind that allergies tend to be worse when you have a cold.
- DO – stay up late anticipating the event…. your allergies will be worse when you’re tired and if you want an honest reaction, this will test your limits.
- DO schedule a LONG visit. Visit for as long as you can, then go take a break (for example go shopping). Let the natural endorphins/adrhenaline that you have produced in excitement wear off for a while and only after this waiting period, GO BACK! Visit again.
- DO be honest with yourself. Any symptoms that you are experiencing *could* get worse over time.
- DON’T freak if you start reacting on your way home with your kitten. I am living proof that some allergies do dissipate with time (regardless of what some doctors might say!
- DO consider taking allergy shots as soon as you start considering bringing a cat home
– DON’T test the hypoallergenic status of your cat on your family or friends…. without fair warning
